IMA: a flexible reserve service alternative
According to the Marine Corps Reserve Administrative Management Manual (MCO 1001R.1L), the purpose of the Individual Mobilization Augmentee (IMA) program is to facilitate the rapid expansion of active component (AC) organizations to meet wartime military manpower requirements, specifically by providing individual Reserve manpower that can be accessed during the initial stages of an emerging crisis, prior to mobilization of the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR). In other words, the IMA program uses Reserve Component (RC) Marines to support active units as opposed to reserve units. This results in a few key distinctions in a Marine's reserve experience:

Flexibility
Because an IMA supports active units, IMA Marines generally have more flexibility to support the unit as their schedule allows, just so long as they meet their annual commitments.

Impact
Marines assigned to the IMA continue to serve in capacities that often have immediate, real-world impacts on the AC's mission.

Same Pay, Same Benefits
IMAs earn the same drill pay and benefits as SMCR Marines, including affordable options for healthcare and dental care, education benefits, continued Thrift Savings Plan contributions, base privileges, and more.
