Master Gunnery Sergeant Kiel J Hoffman
Master Gunnery Sergeant Hoffman is a native of Michigan City, Indiana, and enlisted in the Marine Corps in July 2000 into the delayed entry program. He graduated from Michigan City High School in 2001, then later that year attended boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego in July, Combat Training at Camp Pendleton, California, in November, and Intelligence Training in Dam Neck, Virginia, in December.
Then-Private First Class Hoffman joined the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing G2 at Miramar, California, in 2002, then was quickly assigned to the S2 for Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 169 at Camp Pendleton. In late 2006, then-Sergeant Hoffman moved to the DC area and joined the Marine detachment at the Defense Intelligence Agency as the operations chief for an analytic wargaming team. He then attended the National Defense Intelligence College. Upon graduation in 2010, Staff Sergeant Hoffman joined 2nd Intelligence Battalion at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. During this period he served as the command intelligence briefer for the II Marine Expeditionary Force Commanding General. As a Gunnery Sergeant, he entered the reserves in January 2014 and joined 2nd Civil Affairs Group (SMCR) as the intelligence chief. In 2016, he joined the IMA detachment at Headquarters, US Marine Corps Intelligence Department. Master Sergeant Hoffman joined the Marine Cryptologic Support Battalion IMA detachment in October 2021.
He is currently on active duty orders as the MCSB Senior Enlisted Advisor through June 2024. Master Gunnery Sergeant Hoffman is currently assigned as the Senior Enlisted Adviser for MCSB. The unit’s function is to train, employ, and deploy Marines to conduct Signals Intelligence, Information Assurance, and National Tactical Integration activities satisfying National Security Agency, Marine Air-Ground Task Force, and Joint Force Intelligence Requirements. In his reserve capacity, his duties include advising IMA detachment leaders on manpower and talent management issues, and participating in working groups and seminars shaping the future of the Marine Corps intelligence enterprise.
Master Gunnery Sergeant Hoffman’s military deployments include tours as an intelligence analyst for HMLA-169 during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, an intelligence analyst for 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment during the first battle of Fallujah in 2004, and intelligence chief for HMLA-169 during counterinsurgency operations in Al Anbar in 2006. He also served as an intelligence analyst supporting combined Special Operations Forces in Kabul, Afghanistan in 2011.
Master Gunnery Sergeant Hoffman received his B.S. in Intelligence from the National Defense Intelligence College in 2010. He received his M.A. in Military History from Norwich University in 2013.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3rd Award) and the Combat Action Ribbon.
Master Gunnery Sergeant Hoffman is married to his wife Victoria, and they have two children – Evangelina, who is 6, and Avery, who is 2. The family and their dogs, Alex and Ace, live in Woodbridge, Virginia.
